Frontier Silicon reaches 10 million milestone in DAB sales worldwide

Sales to double in the next three years driven by new market growth

London – 8th February 2010: Frontier Silicon, the leading supplier of DAB digital radio technology, announces that it has reached a record 10 million sales in DAB systems worldwide.

With over 12 million DAB units already in circulation – and with this total growing by more than two to three million per year – Frontier Silicon expects to reach 20 million sales in less than half the time it has taken to reach 10 million.

To date, DAB has proved very popular with Danish consumers and broadcasters alike.  Every fourth Dane has a DAB radio – a total of 1.3 million people – and 1 million DAB devices have been sold.  According to industry body DAB Digital Radio Danmark, Danes want DAB in their cars, too; just under a quarter are willing to pay for DAB as an in-car additional option.  Signal coverage is currently at 90 per cent, with plans underway to increase indoor and outdoor coverage.  This is in addition to the planned launch of DAB+, along with the roll-out of a new multiplex for local and regional stations, boosting both coverage and the number of digital radio stations overall.

Anthony Sethill, Chief Executive of Frontier Silicon, said:

“This landmark 10 million sales figure is a big step forward for DAB.  Frontier Silicon systems are the most widely deployed in the world and this trend is set to continue as European take-up gathers pace.  As Denmark prepares to launch DAB+ in 2010, we’re ramping up our investment in digital technology, delivering systems that are cheaper, more energy efficient, interactive and interoperable across digital standards in Europe and in cars.”
