Frontier Silicon reaches 10 million milestone in DAB sales worldwide

Sales to double in the next three years driven by new market growth

London – 8th February 2010: Frontier Silicon, the leading supplier of DAB digital radio technology, announces that it has reached a record 10 million sales in DAB systems worldwide.

With over 12 million DAB units already in circulation – and with this total growing by more than two to three million per year – Frontier Silicon expects to reach 20 million sales in less than half the time it has taken to reach 10 million.

Switzerland is one of the most significant markets for DAB in the world.  The first country in the world to launch DAB+, it currently enjoys 90 per cent population coverage, up from only 3 per cent in 2008 when AM switch-off began.   Frontier Silicon hopes to build on the success of 2009 - when a total of 250,000 DAB+ radios were sold in Switzerland - with the roll-out of DAB ‘slideshow’ in 2010.  This comes in response to Swiss broadcasters’ desire to deploy ‘slideshow’ technology into mass production following a successful series of recent trials.  DAB radios may currently be purchased in about 1,000 Swiss retailers and there is a range of 25 different radios available in the Swiss market.

Anthony Sethill, Chief Executive of Frontier Silicon, said: “This landmark 10 million sales figure is a big step forward for DAB.  Frontier Silicon’s radio technology is the most widely deployed in the world and this trend is set to continue as European take-up gathers pace.  We’re ramping up our DAB investment in-line with the migration to digital, delivering systems that are cheaper, more energy efficient, interactive and interoperable across digital standards in Europe and in cars.”
